Intensive Outpatient Treatment Program

Visions Outpatient Services in Lafayette, LA offers an intensive outpatient program (IOP), designed to prevent inpatient hospitalization or to provide a step-down level of care for individuals who have completed either inpatient treatment or partial hospitalization program (PHP) and who can benefit from continued professional support prior to returning home.

Intensive outpatient program: Individuals who enroll in IOP attend treatment three days per week, and participate in five groups each day, for a total of 15 groups each week. IOP participants may receive transportation to and from treatment, and lunch is provided. The typical length of stay in IOP is about six weeks.

The goal of IOP is to help individuals understand their condition, improve their ability to cope, achieve their full potential in terms of both functioning and independence, and improve their overall quality of life. To accomplish these objectives, IOP incorporates a variety of treatment options, including therapy, psychotropic medications, and educational groups.

The following four programs are available to IOP participants:

Balance – This program is designed for individuals who are struggling with issues such as depression, anxiety, trauma, compulsive behaviors, bipolar disorder, grief, self-harm, and suicidal ideation. Program components include dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), psychotherapy groups, anger and stress management, coping and life skills education, spiritual enhancement, mindfulness, process groups, and family education.

Recovery – This program, which is based on the principles of the 12-Step recovery model, is designed for patients who struggle with a substance use disorder involving alcohol or narcotics, as well as those who are dealing with dual diagnosis. Individuals in this program will participate in the program components that are listed for the Balance program, and will also receive chemical dependency education, relapse prevention guidance, and education in the 12 steps.

Stability – This program is designed for men and women who have been diagnosed with a depressive disorder, an anxiety disorder, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and obsessive/compulsive disorder (OCD). The Stability program is also an effective treatment environment for individuals who are struggling with issues related to anger, impulse control, and change of life matters. Group psychotherapy topics include managing stress and anger, enhancing coping skills, developing a positive attitude, improving communication skills, building self-esteem, changing distorted thinking patterns, medication management, relapse prevention, and adjusting to change.

Experience – The content of this program is similar to that of the Stability program, and is designed for individuals who are experiencing the same issues of those who enroll in the Stability program. However, the Experience program is conducted in a manner that is better suited to geriatric patients, adults who require or can benefit from from a less intense group pace, or individuals who are dealing with mild memory impairment. In addition to the group psychotherapy topics that are described in the Stability program section, services in the Experience program also features cognitive enhancement and reminiscing.
